With so many wellness trends popping up from time to time, the 2019 wellness trend that is Ayurveda is certainly here to stay. Sister subjects to Yoga and Meditation, Ayurveda not only unites the two under the concept of balance but also even further promotes the need for balance through other areas of life: exercise, sleep, food, skin.

Ayurveda: The 2019 Wellness Trend

What is Ayurveda?

Ayurveda dates back 5,000 years ago and originates in India. This ancient well-being system is one of the oldest health and wellness systems in the world that draws on nature to heal and promote good health. It draws on the five elements and how the different dominating levels balance everything that surrounds us, including us. Ayurveda revolves around this idea of balance and how maintaining balance helps us to perform to the best of our abilities and really strive in all areas of life. However, maintaining balance can be difficult, what with physical and emotional factors to take into consideration, as well as hormonal and environmental interruptions too.

The Ayurvedic way of life very much promotes simplicity and tapping into our natural surroundings to heal. Modern, western medicine tends to focus on managing the symptoms of an illness, whereas Ayurveda very much works to dig deep to determine the root cause of the health problem, working to prevent it and ultimately ridding the body of those symptoms. Ayurveda teaches that we can bring ourselves back into balance through Yoga and Meditation, with Yoga being the physical and Meditation the mental form of doing so. We can use Ayurvedic herbs to heal the body internally and when all of these are combined, we can truly enjoy good health and well-being.

What is a Dosha?

Within Ayurveda, there are the doshas: Vata, Pitta and Kapha. Your dosha is your sense of holistic wellbeing and who you are both mentally and physically. Knowing your dosha enables you to recognise when you are out of balance and then adjust your diet, exercise routine or sleep pattern consequentially.

How does Skincare Tie in with Ayurveda?

Urban Veda has formulated 4 skincare ranges with each of the doshas in mind – the fourth being Tri-doshic. The set of ingredients in each skincare range are specifically chosen in order to pacify the doshas and help to bring them back into balance. Here’s how:

Ayurveda: The 2019 Wellness Trend

Vata – the Vata dosha is represented by the elements of Air and Ether. Naturally creative, this dosha is sociable and the life and soul of the party. Due to the two air elements dominating them, Vata’s can suffer from dry and dehydrated skin. Urban Veda’s Radiance Skincare Range is formulated for Vata skin, drawing on naturally hydrating fruit enzymes to restore hydration, such as Goji Berries, Papaya and Orange. Turmeric features as the key ingredient which is not only anti-inflammatory but also works as a fantastic natural skin brightener which leaves the skin with a healthy glow.

Pitta (MY FAVE!) – the Pitta dosha is governed by Fire and Water. Due to the Fire element, this dosha type is highly ambitious, driven and won’t stop until their goal is achieved. They have an internal fire that dominates them, so Pittas tend to have sensitive skin that can easily sunburn. Anyone who is a Pitta can benefit from calming scents as out of balance, they can become quite hot-headed and fiery. Sandalwood is an ingredient that does exactly that and it features as the key ingredient in Urban Veda’s Soothing Range, for the Pitta dosha. Alongside Lavender, Ylang-Ylang, and Clove, the sensitive skin is gently soothed and so is the mind.

Kapha – the Kapha dosha is ruled by the Earth and Water elements. Dominated by these gravity pulling elements, this dosha is extremely grounded, loving and kind. The combination of water with the earth means Kapha skin can be quite congested, oily and acne-prone. The key to Kapha skin is preventing dirty bacteria from spreading so antiseptic and antibacterial ingredients is key. Urban Veda’s Purifying Range contains all the minty ingredients, from Eucalyptus, Mint and Tea Tree, it also features Indian Neem as the key ingredient. Known as the ‘Village Pharmacy’ in India, this ingredient is used in all areas of life for its antiseptic properties, making it an excellent key ingredient for acne-prone skin.

Tri-doshic – the Tri-doshic means a balance of Vata, Pitta and Kapha at complete equilibrium. Urban Veda’s Reviving Range is tailored towards those who are tri-doshic. Featuring Rose as the key ingredient, this range is also catered towards tired and mature skin in need of some pampering to revitalise and rejuvenate the skin. Rose is extremely cooling and hydrating and alongside Rose is an Indian ingredient called Arjuna. Arjuna is a root plant which naturally plumps and swells the skin ultimately working to reduce fine lines and wrinkles.

Why not discover your dosha to understand which skincare range is best suited to not only your skin type but also your physical and emotional constitution!
