Be KIND To Yourself
Happy Thursday everyone! This week I am going to talk about my top favourite snacks – the perfect mid-afternoon pick-me-ups. I am also going to talk about the wonderful KIND bars and why I love them SO much!
Afternoon snacks usually fall around 3 pm for me, especially if I am at home working on my laptop. Past: snacking use to be something I did religiously throughout the day, I use to have sugary cereal for breakfast, followed by a snack soon after and this would continue throughout the day, sugar was everywhere and hidden in every meal.
I now ensure I have 3 – 4 main meals a day with a balanced approach to eating well – protein, carbs, fats and some form of vegetable and some snacks in-between. Natural sugars are of course still high in ‘sugar’ but provide additional benefits also, which I would prefer to consume. But remember, a little bit of what you fancy does you no harm at all. It is important to look after the soul.
I am not a nutritionist and I am not trained in any specific field in regards to well-being or fitness, I am just sharing my favourites with you in hope to inspire. This is what works for me and it has been a ‘trial’ and ‘error’ process for a long time. Every single day is a new day to experiment with my nutrition and I love trying out new products.
If you want me to do a blog post on my favourite savoury snacks, please let me know! I have a few!
Some snacks I love which are on the ‘sweet’ side
- Chopped fruit with nut butter – portion size your nut butter, otherwise you may eat the whole tub! – pineapple, grapes, apple and berries are my favourites – Nuts For Pic’s Peanut Butter / Pip and Nut.
- Greek yoghurt or Alpro coconut yoghurt with a handful of coconut chips and some chopped fruit on top – or for extra added protein I love to stir some Whey Box protein into the yoghurt.
- Dark chocolate Kallo rice cakes with a green tea, just like eating a chocolate biscuit!
- Dark 90% chocolate with a warm drink, lemon and hot water, green tea or a peppermint tea – my favourite tea brand – We Are Tea.
- My homemade BB brownies!
- My homemade Pumpkin Pleaser cookies.
- Nakd wholefoods – I love everything they create!
- Real Handful snack packs! These things are heavenly and perfect for on-the-go.
One of my favourite granola brands on the market, great customer service, wholesome, and dense in flavour and texture. These packages are full of nutrients and natural ingredients, they’re pretty special. No processed sugars in sight! I love every single flavour they have to offer and these granolas certainly pack a crunch. I love eating this granola with almond milk, on top of Greek yoghurt or as part of my homemade trail mix which contains – coconut flakes, mixed seeds, raisins, chopped dates, almonds and bee pollen. I could talk about Rolla Granola all day, I am a huge fan of their products and these granola pouches would make a great present for a fellow foodie.
“We have produced a range of granolas developed to provide you with an energy rich and flavour filled start to the day. All have high levels of nuts, seeds and fruit, all aim to provide fibre and natural oils, many of which are high in antioxidants and omega oils.
We have adapted and changed our range to align with the demands of our customers, so we now have sugar free options- with any sweetness coming from fruit and Paleo granola with no cereals and therefore completely gluten free”.
This is the wonderful energy ball, powered by hazelnuts and raisins – my favourite! These energy balls are 100% natural and are based on the popular recipe that Ella created and they are a best seller at her Mae Deli, I am not surprised! They come in three flavours and they are made from four to six ingredients ONLY! No additives, no preservatives and no nasty ingredients – how awesome is that! This one contains – hazelnuts, raisins, dates, cinnamon, cardamom and raw cacao and it tastes absolutely delicious. I am extremely eager to try more of them! Chewy, sweet, energising, warm and amazing with a cup of tea!
“Free from gluten, dairy and refined sugar. Vegan-friendly. Store in a cool dry place”.
Want to try making them yourself? See the recipe here.
I absolutely love smoothies! What we have to be careful of though is the shop bought smoothies packed FULL of hidden sugars and preservatives, both of which play havoc with my digestion and they don’t provide me with a sustainable amount of energy. Homemade smoothies are an easy way of packing in the green vegetables without the added texture and flavour, yes spinach adds a funky colour, but who doesn’t love the colour of the rainbow! Kale and spinach are my smoothie favourites and add extra hidden nutrients.
Basic go-to smoothie recipe:
- 1 frozen banana, 1 generous handful of spinach or kale, 1tsp of raw cacao powder, 1tsp of chia seeds, 1 handful of frozen berries and enough unsweetened almond milk to allow the mixture to blend to your desired consistency! You can also add ice, which tastes delicious too.
I sometimes pour my smoothies into a bowl and decorate them with my favourite toppings – granola, dried fruit and seeds. Or I drink the smoothie on-the-go!
Emily Fruit Crisps
Sweet & savoury concepts combined! = perfection and I was so excited to try these. These ones are the crunchy pineapple and I was so impressed. Crunchy, subtly sweet and sour and they really inject your taste buds with goodness. I am keen to try the other flavours and share my verdict. I am sure this will happen soon!
Let’s not forget these concepts also:
- Low in fat and calories
- Gluten free and vegan
- No added sugar
- No funny stuff – no additives, no preservatives
- Kosher and halal certified
“The pineapples we use are always exceptionally juicy with a brilliant, vibrant tropical taste – sweet with a little tangy sourness as well. They make an incredibly crunchy, completely delicious crisp”.
“Emily is an exciting new range of snacks that have all the goodness of fruit with the crunch of a crisp. Named after one of the co-founders, these Fruit Crisps are something of a little love story. While she and her lovely partner, Alex were travelling in the Far East, they found an astonishing way of making crisps in a vacuum that preserves all the good things in fruit while still being amazingly crunchy… They decided to make their own and Alex named them after Emily so he could see her name wherever he went”…
“Our aim is to make the world a little kinder, one snack and act at a time. One simple belief underpins it all: there’s more to business than just profit”.
The excitement was through the roof when these arrived at my doorstep. Sweet treats combining some of my favourite ingredients – peanut butter, dark chocolate, nuts and dried fruit. These snack bars are the perfect mid-afternoon snack when you need something sweet, they would also make the perfect evening treat too. I don’t usually eat a full one in one go, I like to make them last because they’re so delicious. A good way of eating these is crumbling them over some yoghurt, sprinkling them on your porridge oats in the morning or popping them on top of your smoothies for added crunch and indulgence. Chocolate bars have never tasted so good and have never had so many nutritional benefits, until now. I absolutely love these and I couldn’t recommend them enough. My personal favourites so far: Dark Chocolate and Cherry Cashew, Peanut Butter and Dark Chocolate and Almond and Coconut.
Ingredients You Can See & Pronounce.
“We believe if you can’t pronounce an ingredient, it shouldn’t go into your body. Actually, it shouldn’t even go into your cupboard. That’s why KIND®snacks are made from whole nuts, fruits and spices, bound together with honey for a simple and delicious snack. And we don’t skimp on the good stuff; our bars are crafted with up to 72% nuts! Feel good knowing you just discovered a delicious way of getting your body what it needs”.
I hope you liked this blog post and now feel the urge to try these delicious snacks. I have chosen these snacks because they’re some of my new favourites and they have instantly made snack-time something exciting and nutritious. Pre-packaged snacks are convenient and are a great alternative if you’re short on time. I would love to post more about my favourite snacks and I will be in the future! It is time to sample some more snacks on the health food market.
